AMU: Union workers reach tentative agreement with Arconic on 3-year contract
The United Steelworkers (USW) union on May 16 reached a tentative agreement with Arconic on a three-year master agreement covering workers at four facilities.
The next step: Each local union—at Alcoa, Tenn.; Davenport, Iowa.; Lafayette, Ind.; and Massena, NY—must vote to ratify the tentative agreement for it to be finalized.
“From the beginning of these negotiations, our members stood together and made clear that they were determined to secure a fair agreement that recognizes their hard work and dedication,” said Emil Ramirez, USW International vice president and chair of the negotiating committee.
The union had voted on May 14 to authorize a strike if necessary.
The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply, and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech, and service occupations.
Pittsburgh-based Arconic also applauded the tentative labor pact.
“After three weeks of bargaining, including today’s (May 16) 24-hour extension that permitted the parties to continue to discuss, we are pleased to share we have reached a tentative agreement,” the Pittsburgh-based company said in a statement. “We believe this contract strongly supports USW employees.”
USW also has ongoing negotiations with aluminum producer Alcoa, and steelmakers U.S. Steel and Cleveland Cliffs.
