American Axle Workers prepare for potential strike on Sunday
Written by Kristen DiLandro
Members of the United Autoworkers (UAW) local 2093 working at American Axle (Dauch Corp.), a supplier for General Motors, could walk out of the Three Rivers, Mich., facility at midnight on Sunday, May 31.
According to the union’s May 27 statement, members are awaiting a new agreement from management of Detroit-based American Axle ahead of Sunday. The workers filed several Unfair Labor Practice charges related to American Axle’s conduct following its vote to approve a strike earlier this month. The members say the company has threatened and intimidated workers in the lead up to Sunday.
Workers voted 98% to proceed with the strike if the company didn’t propose a “fair contract.” The workers contend that they agreed to reduce their wages to $14.50 per hour from $29/hour in 2008 when the facility was facing the Great Recession and potential closure.
Since then, workers’ wages have stagnated at a top end of $22/hour after a five-year progression, with inflation-adjusted wages cut in half from their pre-2008 levels.
A GM spokesperson told SMU that it is “continuing to monitor the situation.”
The union plans to livestream negotiation updates on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. ET in the lead up to the potential walkout.
Note that in January, American Axle changed its name to Dauch Corp.
