Trump says he may not renew USMCA
Written by Laura Miller
President Donald Trump signaled last week that he may not renew the US-Mexico-Canada agreement.
“I’m not looking to renew it,” he said at the White House on Wednesday, June 10, according to a Reuters report.
The USMCA trade pact, which replaced NAFTA, was signed in 2018 and is up for renewal this year.
“I don’t know that I’m going to renew it,” Trump blabbed. “Because to be honest with you, United States does much better. We don’t need anything that Canada has, we don’t need anything that Mexico has, but they need everything that we have.”
The president said the two countries “have to treat us better,” citing the extensive trade deficits the US holds with both Canada and Mexico. “We should have surpluses with them,” he bemoaned.
Bilateral negotiations
The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) held a first bilateral negotiating round with Mexico late last month. A second round is scheduled for June 16-17 in Washington, D.C., and a third round the week of July 20 in Mexico City.
No date has been set for formal bilateral negotiations between the US and Canada, though the two held a “positive meeting” on the review, according to the Reuters report.
Canada’s Ambassador to the US Mark D. Wiseman said on Monday that discussions with Washington have been “productive, serious, informed and respectful.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said last week that Canada is also seeking bilateral negotiations with Mexico.
