USTR traveling to Mexico this week to discuss USMCA, steel tariffs

US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer will travel to Mexico from Wednesday to Friday this week to continue bilateral discussions related to the USMCA joint review.
Greer and Mexican Secretary of Economy Luis Ebrard will discuss topics including steel and aluminum and derivative products, as well as automobiles.
Other issues include economic security, labor, agriculture, and electronic payment services.
The USTR will also meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss the progress of negotiations related to the trade pact.
As previously reported, Mexico is urging the US to remove Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs.
“I thank Secretary Ebrard and his team at the Secretariat of Economy for their collaboration over several months to reinforce the US-Mexico bilateral trade and economic relationship,” Greer said in a statement on July 17.
More generally, the US is meeting with Mexico in Mexico City starting on July 21 for three days for the third round of bilateral negotiations to discuss the same issues.
The official review period kicked off on July 1. Recall that the US did not renew the USMCA agreement in its current form. This triggers one-year reviews for the next 10 years, with a potential termination date of July 1, 2036, if no extension is ultimately agreed upon.
