Senate Finance Committee advances ITC nominees; AISI, SMA cheer
Written by Ethan Bernard
The US Senate Finance Committee has advanced the nominations of five nominees to the US the International Trade Commission (ITC). The full Senate will now consider the nominees for commissioner positions.
Both the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) applauded the news.
“The International Trade Commission’s work to investigate unfair trade practices and provide Congress and the administration with quality analysis of trade issues is critical, and a full slate of commissioners will help it accomplish those missions,” Chairman Mike Crapo (R -Idaho) said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I am confident in each nominee’s ability to serve Americans’ best interest and look forward to their confirmation by the full Senate,” he added.
Brett Doyle, David Foley Jr., Peter-Anthony Pappas, Bartholomew Thanhauser, and Samuel Negatu were each advanced to be considered as a commissioner of the ITC.
The Senate has not yet announced a floor date on its calendar.
SMA, AISI back advancement
AISI and SMA both supported the advancement.
“The International Trade Commission’s work to investigate unfair trade practices and provide Congress and the administration with quality analysis of trade issues is critical, and a full slate of commissioners will help it accomplish those missions,” AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey said in a statement.
“I am confident in each nominee’s ability to serve Americans’ best interest and look forward to their confirmation by the full Senate,” he added.
Dempsey urged swift action by the full Senate to confirm these nominations “so that the ITC can carry out its full range of responsibilities.”
“Restoring the ITC to full strength will help ensure that trade remedy investigations move forward without disruption and that American manufacturers continue to receive a fair and timely hearing as to whether dumped and/or subsidized imports are injuring or threatening injury to an American industry,” he said.
Likewise, SMA’s EVP Brandon Farris supported the action.
“The Steel Manufacturers Association appreciates the opportunity to express our strong support for the confirmation of five nominees to serve as commissioners on the US ITC,” he said in a statement. “We urge the Senate to confirm these nominees, which will strengthen the ITC’s ability to effectively enforce US trade laws.”
