Our apologies to those who waited to register for our Steel 101 workshop which is being held in Blytheville, Arkansas. We have sold out the workshop and have a fairly significant waiting list. We are working on our schedule for next year when we anticipate holding four workshops around the country. We are also taking a look to see if we can squeeze another workshop into this year’s schedule. Bear with us as we work through the process with a couple steel mills, hotels, etc. and we will provide when we will conduct another workshop as soon as possible.
We also have a number of disappointed people who were looking forward to our Fall 2013 Steel Summit Conference. We had to make a decision earlier this year as to where our focus and energies needed to be – the new website or our conference. We decided since we are a small team that our members deserved an upgraded web experience and that is where our focus has been in earnest this year. We still have a tentative (hopefully fixed) launch date of Friday the 13th of September… We will conduct our Steel Summit Conference in the late summer/early Fall 2014.
For those who have been with SMU since the beginning the evolution of the company is probably truly amazing. I spoke to one long-time member the other day who reminded me that they were on board before there was an official company – just a daily or close to every day fax being sent to my customers around the country. This new website is our third in a little more than 5 years and I am already calling it Phase 1 of multiple planned expansions.
We look forward to Friday the 13th and providing some new insights and information flow to our members.
As always your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

Sure, demand isn’t as good the market had hoped it would be earlier this year. But assuming it doesn’t fall of a cliff, buyers will have to restock at some point. And that might give domestic mills enough leverage to raise prices again.

While I would anticipate market sentiment to pivot and improve if all the questions around tariffs were answered, that still leaves us with a few other factors.

Cliffs came tantalizing close to buying U.S. Steel in 2023. There were rumors in 2024 that Cliffs might buy NLMK USA before it ultimately purchased Stelco for $2.5 billion in November of last year. Who would have thought that asset sales would have been the focal point of discussion just six months later?
