Written by John Packard
April 13, 2014
Three of the four indices followed by Steel Market Update posted higher flat rolled steel averages through the end of this past week. CRU made the biggest catch-up move taking their benchmark hot rolled index to $654 per ton, up $21 per ton since the previous week. CRU and SMU HRC indices are now within $1 of each other.
Platts took their hot rolled numbers up as well from $655 to $670 per ton. SteelBenchmarker did not report new HRC numbers this past week but should early this coming week.
Looking at the average dollars per ton increase by product we found hot rolled up $15, cold rolled prices rose by an average of $15 per ton, galvanized by $16 per ton and Galvalume by $20 per ton. Plate products are up an average of $5 per ton but seem to be stuck around $800-$810 per ton.
FOB Points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
CRU: Midwest Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
