Mark Millet, president and chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics Inc. has been named “Steelmaker of the Year” by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). The award is presented annually to recognize notable leaders for their impact on the steel industry.
Millet also received the AIST William T. Hogan SJ Lecture Award for his paper “Making Money in the Steel Industry is Not a Mystery,” which he presented as the keynote address at the AIST Tech 2014 conference.

In his book, “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell highlights that success is more often than not born of a discrete, unique opportunity. I have been blessed, since my life has been full of opportunity, from a wonderful family, to wonderful friends and partners, and a fulfilling career,” said Millet at the AIST conference.
Millet has been president and CEO of SDI since January 2012. As one of the co-founders of SDI, he held a variety of senior management positions at the company as well as serving on the board of directors since the inception of the company in 1993. Prior to the formation of SDI, Millett was employed by Nucor Corp. for 12 years, serving in key technical and management roles He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in metallurgy from the University of Surrey, England.
Previous recipients of the prestigious Steelmaker of the Year award include Lakshmi Mittal, John Ferriola and Ken Iverson.
