Steel Market Update’s acquisition by the CRU Group is already paying dividends to SMU followers, who are invited to sit in on a free webinar hosted by experts from CRU beginning at 10 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
The latest in CRU’s webinar series, “Mid-Year Update on the North American Steel Market,” will feature short presentations from three experienced CRU analysts covering a range of North American economic, trade and flat-rolled steel price forecasts and insights.
The three U.S.-based speakers will include: Josh Spoores, CRU’s lead U.S. flat-rolled analyst; Estelle Tran, Americas trade specialist; and Lisa Morrison, CRU’s in-house economist focusing on the analysis of U.S. economics, policy and scenarios. Complementing Steel Market Update’s market coverage, the CRU analysts will deliver a coherent outlook for the U.S. steel market, integrating our understanding of policy, economics and the practical reality of the domestic steel market and industry.
Any SMU customer (whether of the newsletter, the SMU Steel Summit or training courses) can register for the webinar for free. Participants will be able to post questions privately for speakers throughout the webinar.
“Our webinars are a great way for customers to get added value in terms of insights into the markets and topics they are most interested in,” said Nick Edwards, CRU’s General Manager, Analysis. “It is simple to register in advance, and then all you need is web browser to ‘join.’ Your identity is hidden from other attendees, but you can still post questions and get insightful responses from the CRU analysts. We are hoping this particular webinar will be especially useful for those customers who will going to the SMU Steel Summit only a few weeks later.”
John Packard, President & CEO of Steel Market Update said of the webinar, “I have participated in past CRU webinars and I found them to be highly informative and very much worth the time. This is a great opportunity for SMU members.”

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
