Written by Brett Linton
December 17, 2019
Flat rolled steel and plate prices remained range-bound this week. The latest price moves by the domestic steel mills (+$40/ton on flat rolled) did not have time to move the needle and take prices higher. As we enter the Christmas and Hanukkah Holidays, we anticipate minimal spot trades over the next couple of weeks. SMU still has our price momentum indicators on all products at “Higher” meaning we anticipate prices to move higher over the next 30 days.
Here is how we see prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $540-$600 per ton ($27.00-$30.00/cwt) with an average of $570 per ton ($28.50/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained the same compared to one week ago. Our overall average is unchanged compared to last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is Higher, meaning we expect prices to increase over the next 30 days.

While end-use demand is stable, inventories are well-stocked, keeping purchases limited. Domestic availability is sufficient to meet current demand, hindering the appetite for imported material. Meanwhile, prices for scrap remained under pressure in June, with […]
