AISI Taps Goncalves for Chairman Role


Lourenco Goncalves, chairman, president, and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, has been elected as chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the institute said on Monday.

AISIThe election for the two-year term by AISI’s board of directors took place at the AISI General Meeting at the InterContinental Hotel-The Wharf in Washington, D.C.

“Lourenco is a dynamic leader in the global and domestic steel industry and a vocal advocate for the industry in the public policy arena,” AISI president and CEO Kevin Dempsey said in a statement.

Dempsey added that he is confident that “under Lourenco’s guidance and leadership, we will continue to see many successes.”

Goncalves said he was honored that “my fellow AISI board members have placed their trust in me to lead the institute.”

He indicated that decarbonization policy would be a key focus during his tenure.

“Our member companies continue to make significant investments in decarbonization and clean steel production, and we must work together to make this fact completely understood and accepted,” Goncalves said.

He said he would also focus on alleged “trade-distorting policies” of foreign governments and on returning manufacturing to the US.

Additionally, AISI said that Luca Zanotti, president of Tenaris USA, was elected as a new director on the AISI board. Also, Leon Topalian, chair, president, and CEO of Nucor and former AISI chairman, was elected vice-chairman.
