Daniel Doderer of Flack Global Metals (FGM) is the recipient of the 2023 SMU NexGen Leadership Award.
Doderer was recognized on stage at the SMU Steel Summit this week in Atlanta in front of an audience of over 1,400 industry professionals. Presenting the award were Nicola Coslett, CEO of CRU Events; Phillip Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA); and Kenneth Jaycox, chief commercial officer of U.S. Steel.
The award, sponsored by SMU and SMA, is bestowed upon an emerging leader in the industry who is recognized as a positive force within their company, and one who inspires and encourages professional and personal development in themselves and others.
Doderer, an economist and research director for FGM, has been with the company since October 2018. His extensive historical analysis and reports on the steel industry and broader US economy help the team at Flack Metal Bank in making crucial financial and risk management decisions for their clients.
Recipients of the award are given the opportunity for a one-on-one mentorship day with an executive from the industry. This year, that executive is U.S. Steel’s Jaycox.
Upon receiving the award, Doderer thanked the leaders at FGM for supporting him.
“Conferences like this, opportunities like this remind me that when there are problems, there are solutions. I’m eager to see where the industry goes and to be a part of it,” Doderer said upon receiving the award.
The other two finalists for the award were Priefert Steel’s Braden Halley and Friedman Industries’ Kyle Bingham.
Halley, a graduate of Texas A&M University, has been a steel buyer for Priefert since 2020.
Bingham has been in the steel industry since 2012 and is currently general manager of Friedman’s Midwest facilities in East Chicago, Ind., and Granite City, Ill.
SMU congratulates Halley, Bingham, and Doderer on being named finalists for the prestigious award, We also thank FGM, Priefert, and Friedman for recognizing these outstanding emerging leaders.
