Olympic buys Georgia components manufacturer Metal Works

Cleveland-based Olympic Steel announced its first acquisition of 2024 on Monday.

The Cleveland-based national service center has acquired Georgia-based components manufacturer Metal Works. It did not disclose terms of the all-cash transaction.

Metal Works, with two processing facilities in Oakwood, Ga., manufactures carbon steel and aluminum components for service station canopies, deck clips, long gutters, trim, boat docks, solar canopies, and ground racking.

Continuing to operate as Metal Works, it will report its financials as part of Olympic’s Carbon Flat Rolled segment. Its president, Ben Houston, will stay on to lead the company with the rest of the management team.

“Metal Works will continue to grow our manufacturing footprint and move us further into diverse markets,” Olympic President and COO Andrew S. Greiff said in a statement. “The business’s higher-return products and services are expected to reduce earnings volatility and increase sales and profit returns.”

In Olympic’s third-quarter earnings report earlier this month, CEO Richard Marabito commented that the company continues actively pursuing M&A opportunities. Noting that he’d be disappointed not to complete a purchase each year, he’d hinted an acquisition announcement would be forthcoming when he said it’d “been about a year” since the company’s last.

“Continued growth in manufactured metal products is a key component of our strategy, and we are excited to welcome Metal Works to our enterprise,” Marabito said on Monday.
