US HR price premium over imports edges higher

Hot-rolled (HR) coil prices ticked up in the US last week, while tags in offshore markets were mostly unchanged. The result: US hot band is more expensive than imports on a landed basis.

SMU’s average domestic HR price last week was $690 per short ton (st), up $15/st from the week before. US hot band prices have rebounded from a 20-month low of $635/st in late July. But prices have varied only slightly since – averaging around $680/st.
