SMU Price Ranges: Sheet and plate products inch higher
Written by Brett Linton
Sheet and plate steel prices moved higher in unison this week. SMU’s price indices rose $5-15 per short ton (st) from last week, with many now up to multi-month highs. Prices are now $10-45/st greater than the levels recorded four weeks ago.
Buyers remain cautious as prices continue to tick higher. Demand is reported to be marginally adequate, and confidence still fragile. Sources report firmer mill pricing with limited discounts and tighter spot supply.
Hot-rolled (HR) coil prices increased for the fifth week in a row, rising $5/st week on week (w/w) to $830/st. This is the highest our HR index has been in over three months.
Our cold rolled index rose by $10/st w/w to $1,020/st, marking the fourth consecutive weekly gain. CR is now at the highest average seen since July.
Tandem products saw varying degrees of increases. Galvanized prices increased for the third straight week, rising $5/st w/w to a six-week high of to $945/st. Meanwhile, Galvalume rose $15/st from last week to a 12-week high of $980/st.
Plate prices ticked higher for the second week in a row, rising $10/st w/w to a 10-week high of $1,010/st.
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains pointing higher for all sheet and plate products, signaling that we foresee prices continuing to rise from here.
