Algerian rebar hit with stiff CVDs

    Written by Laura Miller

Rebar imports from Algeria are now subject to stiff countervailing duties (CVDs).

The US Commerce Department assigned the imports a final ad valorem subsidy rate of 72.94%. It applies to Tosyali Iron Steel Industry Algeria and all other producers and exporters.

In this case, because Algeria is not a Subsidies Agreement country under US trade law, the International Trade Commission (ITC) was not required to issue an injury ruling. Therefore, Commerce officially issued the CVD order on July 6 without an injury determination, as per a Federal Register filing.

The CVD is in addition to the 127.32% anti-dumping duty issued in late April.

The petitioner in this trade case is the Rebar Trade Action Coalition (RTAC), comprising Nucor, Steel Dynamics Inc., CMC, Gerdau, Byer Steel, and Optimus Steel.

After 83,124 metric tons of Algerian rebar arrived on US shores last year, none have been received so far this year.
