Commerce sets preliminary CVDs on Algerian wire rod

    Written by Laura Miller

Wire rod imports from Algeria face new countervailing duties (CVDs) in the US.

The US Department of Commerce made a preliminary determination in the trade case investigating allegedly subsidized wire rod from Algeria. It initiated the case on May 1 at the request of US wire rod producers.

The agency set a preliminary countervailable subsidy rate of 73.33% for SPA Algerian Qatar Steel and all other producers and exporters.

In 2025, the period of investigation, Algeria sent 29,805 metric tons (mt) of wire rod to the US. So far this year, it has not sent any.

    Rebar

In a separate trade case, Algerian rebar is now also subject to a hefty CVD of 72.94% and an anti-dumping duty of 127.32%.

    Flat rolled

Last year and through May this year, wire rod and rebar were the only steel products exported from Algeria to the US.

Interestingly, US import data show the nation sent some flat-rolled steel in June. Based on the month’s license count, 14,878 mt of hot-rolled sheet and 4,895 mt of coiled plate were sent in June alone.
