U.S. Rig Count Down 96 and Canada Up 26
Written by Brett Linton
September 13, 2013
According to Baker Hughes data from September 13th, 2013, the U.S rig count for this week is 1,768 rigs exploring for or developing oil or natural gas. This count is an increase of 1 rig when compared to last week, with oil rigs down 4 to 1,361 rigs, gas rigs up 7 to 401 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs down 2 to 6 rigs. Compared to last year the 1,768 count is a decrease of 96 rigs, with oil rigs down by 52, gas rigs down by 47, and miscellaneous rigs up by 3.
The Canadian rig count decreased by 9 to 380 rigs this week, with oil rigs down 9 to 238 rigs, and gas rigs unchanged at 142 rigs. Compared to last year the 380 count is an increase of 26 rigs, with oil rigs down by 18 and gas rigs up by 44. International rigs decreased by 38 to 1,267 rigs for the month of July, an increase of 6 rigs from the same month one year ago.
About the Rotary Rig Count
A rotary rig is one that rotates the drill pipe from the surface to either drill a new well or sidetracking an existing one. They are drilled to explore for, develop and produce oil or natural gas. The Baker Hughes Rotary Rig count includes only those rigs that are significant consumers of oilfield services and supplies. SMU recently published an article covering the importance of drilling rigs to the steel industry which can be seen here.
The Baker Hughes North American Rotary Rig Count is a weekly census of the number of drilling rigs actively exploring for or developing oil or natural gas in the United States and Canada. Rigs considered active must be on location and drilling. They are considered active from the time they break ground until the time they reach their target depth.
The Baker Hughes International Rotary Rig Count is a monthly census of active drilling rigs exploring for or developing oil or natural gas outside of the United States and Canada. International rigs considered active must be drilling at least 15 days during the month. The Baker Hughes International Rotary Rig Count does not include rigs drilling in Russia or onshore China.

CRU: Longs pricing trends diverge in North, South America
Most longs prices in the US were unchanged this month, except for rebar, which declined by $1.50/cwt ($30/short ton) m/m. While end-use demand is stable, inventories are well-stocked, keeping purchases limited. Domestic availability is sufficient to meet current demand, hindering the appetite for imported material. Meanwhile, prices for scrap remained under pressure in June, with […]
Nucor cuts plate prices by $125/ton, cites ongoing competition
Nucor Corp. announced that its plate mill group would cut prices for as-rolled, discrete, and normalized plate with the opening of its August order book.
Nucor cuts HR price for fourth straight week
Nucor lowered its consumer spot price (CSP) for hot-rolled (HR) coil by another $10 per short ton (st) for the first week of July. The steelmaker said in a letter to customers on Monday that its CSP base price for the week will be $670/st for all of its sheet mills with the exception of California Steel Industries (CSI).
Cliffs sets $720/ton HR price with opening of August books
Cleveland-Cliffs on Tuesday announced its monthly hot-rolled (HR) coil price of $720 per short ton (st) with the official opening of its August order book. The rate is down from last month’s price of $800/st.
CRU: Demand weakness continues to weigh on global sheet markets
Demand has remained persistently weak across the globe for sheet steel, weighing on prices. US HR coil prices fell the furthest this week as high-volume, low-priced deals were transacted as mills looked to fill order books and competed with one another amid relative demand weakness. Meanwhile, European prices were also down due to low demand […]
