Weekly Raw Steel Production Continues to be Weak

For the week ending September 26, 2015, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,735,000 net tons of raw steel, a 1.7 percent increase over the previous week but a 7.6 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 72.6 percent, up from 71.4 percent last week but down from 78.1 percent this time last year.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2015 YTD is reported to be 66,092,000 tons, down 8.0 percent from the 71,865,000 tons produced during the same period in 2014. The average capacity utilization rate for 2015 YTD is estimated to be 72.5 percent, down from 78.0 percent for 2014 YTD.
Note that the total production capability figure for Q3 2015 is approximately 31.4 million tons versus 31.6 million tons for the same period last year and 30.7 million tons for the Q2 2015.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 206,000 tons, down 5,000 tons. Great Lakes at 625,000 tons, up 4,000 tons. Midwest at 218,000 tons, unchanged. South at 599,000 tons, up 13,000 tons. West at 87,000 tons, up 17,000 tons. Total production was 1,735,000 tons, up 29,000 tons.

Cliffs seeks $700/ton for HR, up $30/ton from last week
Cleveland-Cliffs said on Wednesday that it would seek at least $700 per short ton (st) for hot-rolled (HR) coil. The Cleveland-based steelmaker said it made the move "due to ongoing market developments." The company said the increase was effective immediately for HR orders for September.
