Weekly Raw Steel Production at Seven Month Low

For the week ending October 31, 2015, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,641,000 net tons of raw steel, a 1.6 percent decrease over the previous week and a 10.8 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 68.6 percent, down from 69.7 percent last week and down from 76.5 percent this time last year.
The last time raw production and the capacity utilization rate was this low was the week ending April 11, 2015 when 1,621,000 tons were produced at a capacity utilization rate of 68.6 percent.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2015 YTD is reported to be 74,507,000 tons, down 8.1 percent from the 81,086,000 tons produced during the same period in 2014. The average capacity utilization rate for 2015 YTD is estimated to be 72.2 percent, down from 77.8 percent for 2014 YTD.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 191,000 tons, down 7,000 tons. Great Lakes at 610,000 tons, up 5,000 tons. Midwest at 215,000 tons, up 13,000 tons. South at 536,000 tons, down 37,000 tons. West at 89,000 tons, unchanged. Total production was 1,641,000 tons, down 26,000 tons.

Nucor cuts HR price for fourth straight week
Nucor lowered its consumer spot price (CSP) for hot-rolled (HR) coil by another $10 per short ton (st) for the first week of July. The steelmaker said in a letter to customers on Monday that its CSP base price for the week will be $670/st for all of its sheet mills with the exception of California Steel Industries (CSI).
