Weekly Raw Steel Production Steady at 1.7 Million Tons

For the week ending February 4, 2017, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,723,000 net tons of raw steel, a 0.7 percent decrease over the previous week but a 3.5 percent increase over the revised rate from the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate for steel production is 72.7 percent, down from 73.3 percent last week but up from 71.2 percent this time last year.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2017 YTD is reported to be 8,562,000 tons, up 5.8 percent from the 8,094,000 tons produced during the same period in 2016. The average capacity utilization rate for 2017 YTD is estimated to be 72.2 percent, up from 68.9 for 2016 YTD.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 216,000 tons, unchanged. Great Lakes at 648,000 tons, down 17,000 tons. Midwest at 163,000 tons, up 4,000 tons. South at 626,000 tons, down 1,000 tons. West at 70,000 tons, up 1,000 tons. Total production was 1,723,000 tons, down 13,000 tons.
About Weekly Raw Steel Production Data
The weekly raw steel production tonnage provided by the AISI is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided by 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The monthly AISI production report provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing over 75 percent of U.S. production capacity.

Nucor cuts HR price for fourth straight week
Nucor lowered its consumer spot price (CSP) for hot-rolled (HR) coil by another $10 per short ton (st) for the first week of July. The steelmaker said in a letter to customers on Monday that its CSP base price for the week will be $670/st for all of its sheet mills with the exception of California Steel Industries (CSI).
