Nucor carbon targets certified by GSCC

Nucor’s “ambitious” carbon targets by the end of the decade and beyond have been certified by the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC).
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker used a base year of 2023 for its science-based emissions targets (SBET). It set an SBET of 0.975 metric tons (mt) of CO2 emissions per mt of hot-rolled steel made by 2030.
In addition, Nucor set a long-term goal of 0.116 mt of CO2 emissions per mt of hot-rolled steel produced by 2050.
“Nucor is a global leader in sustainably produced, low carbon steel production, and they are proving that innovation and vision will drive the steel industry to meet the global community’s Net Zero by 2050 call to action,” GSCC Executive Director Adina Renee Adler said in a statement.
“We congratulate Nucor for investing in initiatives that will see the company meet the ambitious interim and long-term targets that the GSCC has certified,” she added.
Nucor’s targets conform to the GSCC Steel Climate Standard, adopted in August 2023, and were independently verified by sustainability standards firm SCS Global Services. Nucor’s long-term goal is beyond the GSCC Standard’s 2050 objective, according to the statement.
“These targets, and the certification provided by our partners at GSCC, further demonstrates Nucor’s leadership in providing American-made, low embodied carbon steel,” said Greg Murphy, Nucor EVP of business services, sustainability, and general counsel.
Recall that Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) in October became the first US steelmaker to be GSCC certified.
