Domestic HR and offshore import prices continue to diverge

SMU’s average price for domestic hot-rolled (HR) coil ticked down to $785 per short ton (st) this week, $15/st lower than last week’s $800/st.

With only a modest decline in US prices, HR imports, on a landed basis, remain much more expensive than domestic hot band. The diverging trend between stateside and imported prices has widened the price gap and even driven some Asian nations to reach parity, in theory, supported by the 50% tariff.
