    Raw steel output continues to rise in US

    US steel mills continue to increase production, with weekly output again reaching multi-year highs.

    The latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) show raw steel output rising 1.3% week over week (w/w) to 1,880,000 short tons (st) in the week ending May 9. Production is up 9.3% year over year.

    US mills’ capability utilization hit 81.4% last week, up from 80.4% the week prior and from 76.6% a year ago.

    Adjusted year-to-date (YTD) production of 33,285,000 st is 6.3% higher than last year, with YTD utilization at 78.1% this year vs. 76.2% last year.

    Raw production increased w/w in four of the five AISI-defined regions:

    • Northeast – 140,000 st (up 6,000 st)
    • Great Lakes – 522,000 st (up 11,000 st)
    • Midwest – 309,000 st (down 2,000 st)
    • South – 842,000 st (up 4,000 st)
    • West – 67,000 st (up 5,000 st)
