During its upcoming contract negotiations with U.S. Steel (USS), the United Steelworkers (USW) labor union will address wages, retirement, contracting out, health and safety, training, and job security.

In the lead-up to the July 20 contract talks, the USW updates its members on progress before meetings. The latest communication, sent on Wednesday, June 24, provided the additional agenda items. Promising that, in addition to member healthcare benefits, the union plans to discuss the other member concerns when both sides meet in Pittsburgh.

“Under Nippon’s agreement with the federal government, they’re required to spend $11 billion in capital investments by 2028, but where? We need real, binding commitments to investments in our sites – not just words,” the message stated.

Prior to the message sent Wednesday, which elaborated on other issues the union planned to discuss, a message sent on June 18 highlighted the need to discuss the union’s healthcare benefits with USS.

“We’ll be fighting for the fair wages and benefits we deserve now, as well as commitments to the future security of our workplaces and jobs,” the text message said.

USS did not respond to a request for comment.

The current contract expires Sept. 1.
