WSA Reports Steel Production at 1.665 Billion Metric Tons in 2014

The world’s steel producers managed to pump out 1.665 billion metric tons of steel (1.84 billion net tons) during 2014 according to the World Steel Association (WSA) which released their 2014 data book earlier today. According to the WSA, the United States was the third largest steel producing country behind China and Japan. This is the same result as last year. However, India is gaining and could very well pass by the U.S. by this time next year.
China continues to be the gorilla in the room producing 822.7 million metric tons (906.8 million net tons), followed by Japan at 110.7 million metric tons (122 million net tons) and then the U.S.A. at 88.2 million metric tons (97.22 million net tons).
Here are the top 25 steel producing countries in the world during 2015:
ArcelorMittal continues to be the single largest steel mill in the world producing 98.09 million metric tons of steel during calendar year 2014. The second place mill, Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metals Corporation (NSSMC) was half the size of ArcelorMittal.
There are six Chinese companies listed in the top ten producers and there are no U.S. steel mills in the top 10. Nucor is the largest U.S. steel mill at 21.41 million metric tons (23.6 million net tons) with the next U.S. mill being US Steel at 19.73 million metric tons (21.74 million net tons). There are no other U.S. mills listed in the top 50 although this will change for 2015 with AK Steel and Steel Dynamics picking up mills from Severstal.
