SMU Community Chat With Alan Amici of Center for Automotive Research

Guests: Alan Amici

Center for Automotive Research (CAR) president and CEO Alan Amici was the featured speaker on Steel Market Update’s Community Chat webinar on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023.

What We Discussed

The auto industry is shifting from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. This is the most significant change in the 100-year history of the automobile.

Investment in EVs has been substantial in the past two years, with more than $35 billion committed to assembly and battery production in North America alone. R&D priorities are shifting to meet future market demand. This movement from ICEs to EVs was also a focal point in negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and the “Detroit-Three” automakers: General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis.

Tentative agreements have been reached between the union and the automakers. So what impact did the strike have on the automotive ecosystem, how quickly can the supply chain recover, and what do the new contracts mean for stakeholders across the auto industry?
