For the week ending August 3, 2013, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. steel industry produced 1,888,000 net tons of raw steel, a 0.9 percent increase over the previous week and a 1.8 increase over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is
78.8 percent, up from 78.1 percent last week and up from 74.6 percent last year.
The increase in production seems to be focused on the Southern region as the South was reported as having produced 694,000 tons during the week. This is up 25,000 tons compared to the previous week.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: North East at 208,000 NT, down 3,000 tons. Great Lakes at 670,000 NT, down 14,000 tons; Midwest at 229,000 NT, up 8,000 tons; South at 694,000 NT, up 25,000 tons; West at 87,000 NT, up 1,000 tons. Total production was 1,888,000 NT, up 17,000 tons.
As always, the AISI raw steel production and capacity utilization rates are only estimates as the data is from approximately 50 percent of the domestic steel producers

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
