Weekly Raw Steel Production & Capacity Utilization

For the week ending December 28, 2013, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. steel industry produced 1,773,000 net tons of raw steel, a 2.3 percent increase over the previous week but a 0.7 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 74.0 percent, up from 72.3 percent last week and up from 71.7 percent last year.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2013 YTD is reported to be 95,858,000 NT, down 1.4 percent from the 97,249,000 NT produced through the same period in 2012. The average capacity utilization rate for 2013 YTD is estimated to be 76.9 percent, up from 75.2 percent for 2012 YTD.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: North East at 196,000 net tons, down 6,000 tons. Great Lakes at 673,000 NT, up 37,000 tons. Midwest at 249,000 NT, down 2,000 tons. South at 569,000 NT, up 9,000 tons. West at 86,000 NT, up 2,000 tons. Total production was 1,773,000 NT, up 40,000 tons.
