Steel Market Update hot rolled average pricing broke through $500 this week as we saw HRC prices as being $5 per ton lower than one week ago. When looking at the market as a whole we are seeing a slowdown or flattening of the downward price movement. Cold rolled saw the spread between the high and low expand while galvanized remained the same. Our Galvalume number actually rose $5 per ton for the week.
Here is how we see spot flat rolled prices this week (all prices shown are in net tons = 2,000 pounds = 1 net ton):
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU Range is $480-$510 per net ton ($24.00/cwt- $25.50/cwt) with an average of $495 per ton ($24.75/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range remained the same compared to one week ago while the upper end declined $10 per ton. Our average is now $5 per ton lower than last week. SMU price momentum for hot rolled steel is for prices to move lower over the next 30 days.
Hot Rolled Lead Times: 1-4 weeks.
Cold Rolled Coil: SMU Range is $580-$670 per net ton ($29.00/cwt- $33.50/cwt) with an average of $625 per ton ($31.25/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range declined $20 per ton compared to last week while the upper end increased $20 per ton. Our average is unchanged compared to one week ago. SMU price momentum on cold rolled steel is for prices to move lower over the next 30 days.
Cold Rolled Lead Times: 2-6 weeks.
Galvanized Coil: SMU Base Price Range is $30.00/cwt-$32.50/cwt ($600-$650 per net ton) with an average of $31.25/cwt ($625 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the upper and lower ends of our range remained the same compared to one week ago. Our average is the same as last week. SMU anticipates galvanized prices will move lower over the next 30 days.
Galvanized .060” G90 Benchmark: SMU Range is $669-$719 per net ton with an average of $694 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvanized Lead Times: 3-6 weeks.

Our expectation is for Galvalume prices to move lower over the next 30 days.
