Comparison Price Indices: Prices Slide Last Week
Written by John Packard
April 29, 2017
Steel prices were down across the board this past week according to the indexes followed by Steel Market Update. The biggest drops were on our own indices as we saw large moves in hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized steel with a smaller move in Galvalume. Our plate prices were up slightly as we continue to build sources and hone in on the plate numbers (note: our price is delivered to the customer, others are FOB mill).
Hot rolled prices range from a low of $625 per ton on our index to a high of $642 per ton on Platts. SteelBenchmarker, which only produces their steel indices twice per month, saw HRC as averaging $639 per ton.
Cold rolled price averages were SteelBenchmarker $811 per ton, SMU $815 per ton and Platts $840 per ton. All were down from the previous week levels.
SMU galvanized .060″ G90 index dropped $20 per ton to $898 per ton. The extras being used are listed below.
Galvalume .0142″ AZ50, Grade 80 was down $5 per ton to $1131 per ton.
Plate prices ranged from $726 and $735 FOB Mill for SteelBenchmarker and Platts respectively. SMU delivered price for plate was $770 per ton.
SMU Note: Galvanized prices include $78 in extras for a .060″ G90 product. Galvalume prices include $291 in extras for a .0142” AZ50 Grade 80 product.
FOB points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
