SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Momentum Shift for HR

Steel price momentum has shifted Lower for hot rolled steel. With scrap prices down in September, the market may have passed a tipping point.
Here is how we see prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $550-$600 per ton ($27.50-$30.00/cwt) with an average of $575 per ton ($28.75/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained the same compared to one week ago. Our overall average is unchanged compared to last week. Our price momentum on hot rolled steel is now Lower meaning we expect prices to decline over the next 30 days.
Hot Rolled Lead Times: 3-6 weeks
Cold Rolled Coil: SMU price range is $720-$770 per ton ($36.00-$38.50/cwt) with an average of $745 per ton ($37.25/cwt) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range decreased $20 per ton compared to last week, while the upper end remained unchanged. Our overall average is down $10 per ton compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on cold rolled steel is now Neutral, meaning we are waiting for the market to show a clear direction.
Cold Rolled Lead Times: 4-8 weeks
Galvanized Coil: SMU base price range is $35.50-$39.00/cwt ($710-$780 per ton) with an average of $37.25/cwt ($745 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range fell $30 per ton compared to one week ago, while the upper end remained the same. Our overall average is down $15 per ton compared to last weel. Our price momentum on galvanized steel is now Neutral, meaning we are waiting for the market to show a clear direction.
Galvanized .060” G90 Benchmark: SMU price range is $788-$858 per net ton with an average of $823 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvanized Lead Times: 4-9 weeks
Galvalume Coil: SMU base price range is $37.00-$39.00/cwt ($740-$780 per ton) with an average of $38.00/cwt ($760 per ton) FOB mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range remained unchanged compared to last week, while the upper end declined $20 per ton. Our overall average is down $10 per ton compared to one week ago. Our price momentum on cold rolled steel is now Neutral, meaning we are waiting for the market to show a clear direction.
Galvalume .0142” AZ50, Grade 80 Benchmark: SMU price range is $1,031-$1,071 per net ton with an average of $1,051 per ton FOB mill, east of the Rockies.
Galvalume Lead Times: 6-10 weeks
Plate: SMU price range is $720-$805 per ton ($36.00-$40.25/cwt) with an average of $762.50 per ton ($38.125/cwt) FOB delivered to the customer’s facility. Both the lower and upper ends of our range remained the same compared to one week ago. Our overall average is unchanged compared to last week. Our price momentum on plate steel is now Neutral, meaning we are waiting for the market to show a clear direction.
Plate Lead Times: 3-5 weeks
