Nucor Corp. has tapped Fives Group as its partner in designing and manufacturing the new continuous galvanizing line being added at its California Steel Industries (CSI) joint venture in Fontana, Calif.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaking and manufacturing conglomerate said the 400,000-short-ton-per-year (stpy) line is planned for late 2027. It will increase CSI’s total hot-dip galvanizing capacity by 50% to 1.2 million stpy.
The $370-million project is part of Nucor’s larger expansion of its galvanizing capabilities, with plans to bring ~1.3 million st of annual capacity online by the end of 2027 across four mills.
“The California Steel team carefully selected Fives for this project based on the development of confidence between our two teams as well as the past Nucor collaboration with Fives in the two high-end galvanizing lines in our West Virginia facility,” Drew Linder, SCI general manager, said in an announcement.
The mill, owned 51% by Nucor and 49% by Japan’s JFE, has a total sheet-making capacity of 2 million stpy. It doesn’t have melting capabilities but re-rolls slabs into hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized sheet products and ERW pipe.
“This project is a testament to the strength and resilience of our ongoing partnership with Nucor,” commented Guillaume Mehlman, Fives’ president of its Steel & Glass Division. “Our ability to earn their trust stems from our unique technical differentiation and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional, high-quality solutions.”

The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.

CRU: US stainless prices to rise on expanded S232 tariffs
Stainless prices in the US market will rise, following price increases by major US producers. Our base case scenario incorporates higher US prices in the near term, despite the initial negative reaction by the market. US stainless prices will go up in 2025 H2 and will stay elevated in 2026 as tariffs on stainless […]
