SSAB to up plate prices by at least $40/ton

    Written by David Schollaert

SSAB Americas aims to increase prices on all its products by at least $40 per short ton (st).

The steelmaker said in a letter to customers on Friday that the price increase was effective on all new, non-contract orders confirmed to ship from Jan. 4 onward.

The move comes just a day after Nucor – another major US plate producer – said it would be increasing plate by $30/st with the opening of its January order book.

SSAB Americas, in the same letter, said it has now closed its December order book for non-contract orders.

It also said it would continue to apply published extras, regional freight premiums, and non-preferred freight mode extras.

SSAB Americas is a subsidiary of Swedish steelmaker SSAB. It operates plate mills in Mobile, Ala., and Montpelier, Iowa.

SMU’s price for steel plate currently stands at $1,015/st on average. That’s up $55/st from a fall low of $960/st recorded on Sept. 23, according to our interactive pricing tool.

We will next update sheet and plate prices on Tuesday evening.
