Domestic steel shipments ticked up month over month (m/m) in April but were down year over year.
US steel mills shipped 7,356,130 short tons (st) of steel in April, up 0.2% from March, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) said on Thursday. However, this was down 1.9% from the 7,499,979 st shipped in April 2023.
Year-to-date (YTD) shipments in 2024 through April were 29,176,345 st, off 3.2% from shipments of 30,138,521 st in the first four months of last year.
Comparing YTD shipments in 2024 to the first four months of last year shows the following: cold-rolled sheet, up 4%; corrosion-resistant steel, down 2%; and hot-rolled steel, down 2%.
