Written by Becca Moczygemba

Domestic heating and cooling equipment shipments shifted down in July, according to newly released data from the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Shipments in July totaled 1.7 million units, compared to 2.02 million units reported in June. Shipments were down 16% month-over-month (MoM), with double-digit decreases for warm-air furnaces, water heaters, and central air conditioning and heat pumps.

AHRI recorded a 5% drop in shipments for the number of units shipped year-over-year (YoY).

On a 12-month moving average (12MMA) basis, however, shipments were much lower at 1.82 million units per month vs. 2 million units in July 2022.

The chart below shows the total heating and cooling shipments on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis. Shipments fell 7% through July compared with the same period last year. The 3MMA basis has declined every month in 2023, with April seeing the largest decline at 12%.

Residential and commercial storage water heater shipments decreased 19% MoM to a combined 633,654 units but increased 9% YoY from 583,856 units.

July shipments of warm air furnaces totaled 213,572 units, a 19% decrease compared to June.

Central air conditioners and air-source heat pump shipments were down 12% MoM and fell 5% YoY. July saw a total of 529,700 air conditioner units and 326,771 heat pump units shipped.
