Nucor aims for a $60/ton bump on plate prices, holds fuel surcharge
Written by David Schollaert
Nucor said on Wednesday evening it plans to increase plate prices by $60 per short ton (st).
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker announced the price hike in tandem with the opening of its September order book. All orders must be submitted by July 31 to be considered, the letter said.
The company said the increase would apply to all orders that haven’t been confirmed by an order acknowledgement.

SMU’s price assessment for plate currently stands at $1,350/st on average.
Fuel surcharge
Nucor Plate Group will maintain its previously announced fuel surcharge of $10 per short ton (st) for next month, effective on all shipments beginning Aug. 1.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker first said the fuel surcharge was necessary in April to address rising costs, and initially set it at a price of at least $10/st on plate on April 16.
The company has since maintained the $10/st surcharge rate in May, June, and now July.
“We remain committed to providing reliable service and transparency as we adapt to changing market dynamics,” Nucor said in a letter to customers on Monday evening.
Nucor announces the surcharge amount on the 15th of each month for shipments beginning the following month.
