SSAB hikes plate prices by $40/ton, Nucor maintains current pricing
Written by Kristen DiLandro
SSAB Americas aims to increase plate transaction prices by $40 per short ton (st).
In a May 11 price notice, SSAB upped its transaction prices for new, non-contract orders confirmed to ship from June 28 onward.
SSAB’s letter follows Nucor Plate Group’s Friday customer update. On May 8, the Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker decided to leave all plate products prices unchanged.
Nucor will begin accepting orders for July production beginning May 15.
Both SSAB and Nucor’s letters set a deadline of June 5 for considering July orders. And both plate producers said they reserve the right to re-quote any order not confirmed by order acknowledgement.
SSAB will apply published extras, regional freight premiums, and non-preferred freight mode extras.
One East Coast-based service center associate said Nucor’s notification caught him off guard.
“It was certainly a surprise, it’s unlike them to miss opportunities to increase prices,” he said.
On the West Coast, a sheet and plate market distributor said he believes Nucor is extremely strategic and has a sound read on market dynamics.
“My understanding is that Nucor does not want to lose business if imports enter the market. You can bet the other mills will follow suit,” he said.
On May 1, Oregon Steel Mills issued its latest price adjustment, which sought to raise spot prices on plate by $60/st.
SMU last assessed weekly spot prices for plate to fall within a range of $1,190 to $1,260/st on Tuesday, May 5. The next assessment will take place on Tuesday, May 12.
